Artist Close Up Interview:

Nadiia Kushnir, also known as Nadjozna, is a contemporary artist and illustrator whose work is as playful as it is profound. Known for her vibrant colors, whimsical characters, and a unique blend of humor and philosophy, Nadiia has made her mark in the art world. From illustrating over 80 books to being named one of Ukraine’s best illustrators and making it onto the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, her journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.

A Life Shaped by Art and Resilience In her recent interview, Nadiia shared her journey, which began in Ukraine at a young age when she held her first solo exhibition at just 18 years old. Her career has spanned photography, design, and illustration, leading to a distinctive style that blends the playful and the philosophical. Relocating to Canada in 2024 due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine marked a new chapter in her life, one focused on providing safety for her autistic son and continuing her artistic exploration.

The Philosophy of Playful Art Nadiia's art is inspired by her experiences as a mother, an artist, and a human navigating life’s absurdities. She uses humor to explore themes like identity, transformation, and the challenges of existence. Her whimsical characters—a worm that can become an astronaut, a tooth, or a lollipop—invite viewers to find joy in the unexpected and question the world around them.

Exhibitions that Speak to the Heart One of Nadiia’s most notable exhibitions, The Worm Was Born, held at Saw Gallery in Ottawa, showcased the lifecycle of a worm, weaving together themes of transformation, mindfulness, and the beauty of small joys. This personal and deeply philosophical show was a milestone in her career, emphasizing the importance of living in the moment.

Art that Connects and Inspires For Nadiia, art isn’t just about creation—it’s about connection. She believes artists have the power to make people think, laugh, and feel. Her goal? To brighten someone’s day, one painting at a time, and remind them that joy can be found in the simplest things.
